Lake Wakatipu with Pigeon Island, New Zealand

Description: View of Pigeon Island (Wawahi Waka in Maori) on the way from Glenorchy. The island is free of rodents and mustelids and therefore safe haven for endangered endemic species.
Fires decimated the island in the past but now is recovering. There are now many tui, bellbirds, wood pigeons and weka present.
In 2001 the Wakatipu Islands Reforestation Trust was established and with the help of QLDC, Dart River Jet and Project Crimson initiated an island reforestation project.
