Monkey Island Rd, Te Waewae Bay, New Zealand

Description: View of Monkey Island Rd, Te Waewae Bay and distant Hump Ridge.
Monkey Island is a great stopping place for a picnic, to play on the beach or for sightseeing along the Southern Scenic Route.
The island is known by Ngai Tahu as Te Puka o Takitimu, or the anchor stone of the legendary Takitimu waka/canoe that was wrecked in Te Waewae Bay.
At low tide, Monkey Island can be reached by foot. A stairway leads to the top of the island, where there is a great view of the bay and the mountains of Fiordland. (source: www.wonderwalkers.co.nz)
